As almost 10% of Kenya is made up of wildlife sanctuaries, the game viewing here is fantastic and there’s no need to rely on a traditional 4x4: you can ride, walk and canoe as well. To top it all off, being in tropics means there is no time of year when you can’t visit, either.

Gallop alongside herds of zebra and wildebeest to the backdrop of a snow-peaked mountain, or take a walking safari in the north with camels, sleeping in a different tented camp each night. Then, why not spend a few days summiting Mt Kenya or Mt Kilimanjaro? Your evening G&T tastes so much better when you’ve really earned it.

Alternatively, learn to kite surf on the consistent winds of the Indian Ocean, with a house filled with hand-carved furniture as your base. Full of surprises and a tribal culture like no other, there is much more to Kenya than meets the eye.
