RWANDA
More dense jungle than dry grassland, Rwanda is a pristinely untouched wilderness made up of swamps, lakes, misty mountains, tangled acacia woodland and thick rainforest. Here, the mist really does shroud extinct volcanoes where gorillas and chimps can be found. Head off on a tracking walk through the Parc National des Volcans with an expert guide, and you are likely to see rare golden monkeys, huge gorillas and over three hundred species of birds, including brightly coloured hawks and hornbills.
Watching gorillas move about in the forest, eat and communicate with each other in an almost human way is a once-in-a-lifetime experience which every visitor to Rwanda must do. Follow canopy walkways through Nyungwe national park to observe chimps literally swinging through the trees, and sleep in remote, comfortable mountain lodges with fantastic forest views: intrepid, isolated and hugely rewarding.
Simply one of the best wildlife experiences in the world.
