You may think little is known about Ethiopia’s mysterious wolves, craggy mountains, volcanic rifts splitting deserts, churches carved out of caves and signs of early civilisation. But for true adventure, hiking through Simian Mountains National Park can’t be beaten.
 
Ethiopia may conjure images of bone-dry deserts, but did you know its highest points receive some of the only snow in Africa? Clever walking trails through the jungle-covered hills are dotted with tiny villages, perfect for a few days exploration. Follow the lazy Omo River and see fortresses in the old Imperial city of Gondar.

This fossil of a country now hosts comfortable camps, if you know where to look. Feel the earth trembling by the thundering Blue Nile Falls, and watch long-haired baboons show off their vampire-like teeth to the backdrop of curiously square mountain peaks. Where else can you say you’ve done that?
