Children have wonderful imaginations and create their own worlds to explore. In today’s rapidly changing world a family safari to Africa is a wonderful way to allow your children to experience the reality, rather than just imagine it.
Parents lead busy lives and getting quality family time together is invaluable these days. Family safaris provide the perfect opportunity for you and your children to connect, with each other and with nature.
Miles away from the distractions of technology you can be entertained by an abundance of wildlife activities or quietly relax on a peaceful beach in a remote corner of Africa.
Safaris designed around the needs of families are now very much the norm, not the exception. You can expect game drives with child-friendly safari guides, story-telling around a campfire, meals under the stars, specialised children's programmes, unique cultural interactions and family-friendly rooms and meals.
We take great care during the trip planning process to listen carefully so that we discover exactly the types of experience that you enjoy doing together as a family. And then match those needs to the places that we know will suit you, having already experienced them ourselves.
There are a number of spacious family rooms available at many camps and lodges to ensure that parents can sleep near to their children without being cramped in one room. You can choose from several styles of family rooms or even hire an entire safari house or villa complete with your own personal chef and driver guide. These are particularly popular for extended families travelling together.
We generally like our families to avoid the crowds and the faceless chain lodges and stay in smaller and more personal and flexible accommodation which will be able to provide extra special care to you and your children including specially trained child-friendly safari guides and child minders. We also work together with the staff at the chosen accommodation to organise surprises, additional trips and special treats to really ensure your family holiday is unforgettable.
As well as this we can offer specially tailored age-appropriate children's programmes carried out by rangers, trackers, child minders and cooks. These are to encourage children to learn in more detail about the animals and natural environment around them, as well as opportunities to learn about local culture and customs. Additional activities include nature walks, fishing, canoeing, collecting bugs, pods and feathers and learning how to identify game and animal tracks.
Should you wish, you can join in the fun or enjoy some much-needed down time as the dedicated staff ensure that the children are safe and thoroughly entertained.
We are also world closely camps or lodges that offer discounts to make your safari both affordable and flexible. In some cases children receive up to 65% discount during off-peak season and around a 35% discount during peak season and in many cases this reduced rate will be extended up to, and including, age 16 - if sharing with an adult in a family room, triple or twin.
Naturally many parents with younger children are concerned about malaria in Africa. We also recommend a number of malaria-free game reserves down in South Africa and in particular along the Eastern Cape. But do remember these aren't always necessary and sometimes limit the experiences your family can have. Your doctor will be able to recommend anti-malarial drugs suitable for children.
No wonder families return again and again to Africa for what was originally intended to be a ‘once in a lifetime’ holiday.
